Functions of cardiovascular system Flashcards
what are the functions of the cardiovascular system
- delivery of 02 and nutrients
- removal of waste products
- thermoregulation
- fight infection
- blood clotting
what is delivery of 02 and nutrients
deliver supply via bloodstream and demands increase
what is removal of waste products
transports waste products to kidney and liver and takes CO2 to the lungs
what is thermoregulation
responsible for distribution of heat within the body which maintains body temperature
how does the cardiovascular system thermoregulate
using vasoconstriction and vasodilation
what is vasoconstriction
too cold, blood vessels narrow, reduce flow of warm blood near surface of skin, reducing heat loss, can become pale
what is vasodilation
too hot, blood vessels dilate, more blood flow to surface of the skin, heat is lost, skin can become red
what happens to thermoregulation during exercise
increase energy required adjustments to blood flow to maintain our homeostasis
what is homeostasis
process that helps maintain body’s internal environment whilst dealing with external environment
what is temperature homeostasis
thermeostasis
how are temperature changed detected
thermoreceptors which relay into the brain
what is the body’s ‘normal’ temperature

what fights infection
wbc stored in blood destroy pathogens by producing antibodies
