What is the meaning of bridge in education?
Parsons believes that school acts like a bridge between family and society as a whole (secondary socialisation)
What are universalistic standards?
Everyone is judged by the same standards, regardless of family ties, class, race, ethnicity, gender or sexuality
What are particularistic standards?
Children are not judged by standards that can be applied to everyone in society
What are norms?
Unwritten rules or guidelines of society
What are values?
A culture’s standard for discerning (judging) what is good and just in society
What is ascribed status?
The social status of a person that is assigned at birth
What is achieved status?
A social position that a person can acquire on the basis of merit and is earned or chosen
What is the function of socialisation?
To make individuals aware with the norms of a given social group or society.
What is meritocracy?
A social system in which success and status in life depend primarily on individual talents, abilities, and effort

The provision of goods and services
What does ‘society in miniature’ mean?
Education provided children with necessary secondary socialisation
What is the meaning of equality of opportunity?
It’s where individuals are provided with an equal chance in life regardless of social class, ethnicity, age, gender, sexuality or religion

The ways that different groups come together to form a whole in society

Emphasises the cohesive social bond that holds a group together
