Functionalism Flashcards
Parsons
Social order can only be possible if members agree on norms and values - value consensus
What are the systems needs ?
(Parsons)
- Adaptation
- Goal Attainment
- Integration
- Latency = processes that maintain society over time
What is organic analogy ?
(Parsons)
Functions
Systems needs
Systems
What are the 3 parts of the social system ?
(Parsons)
. Individual Action
. Status Roles
. Institutions
Merton
Can’t assume society is always and necessarily moving a smooth-running, well integrated system
Functional Unity
(Merton)
Complex modern societies have many parts - some parts may have ‘functional autonomy’ (independence) from others
Latent Function
(Merton)
Some things may have a latent function - such as promoting a sense of solidarity in times of hardship (e.g: religion)
Logical Criticisms
Critics say functionalism is telelogical (things only exist because of their effect/function)
. Critics argue real explanation of something is one that identifies the cause
^ Criticised for being unscientific
