Functionalism Flashcards

1
Q

What is Boundary Maintenance?

A

This is the idea that a certain level of crime is good for society

This is because when people are punished for committing crimes it teaches people in society not to go against society’s norms and values - This strengthens boundaries and prevents further crime

Q

What is strain theory?

A

Research in USA found that institutions socialised individuals into believing

The American Dream - prosperity and mobility is available to all that work hard

Believe shared goals (financial success, Home ownership)

Achieve these goals by approved means (Work hard in school then get a good grade)

a strain exists between the structural means of achieving the dominant cultural Goal

Q

What are the 5 Ways that people respond to strain theory?

A

Conformism - Accepting the goals and legitimate means to achieve them

Innovation - Subscribe to the goals of the American dream but use illegitimate means

Ritualism - Reject the goals but conform to the means

Retreatism - Reject both the goals of the American dream and subscribe to illegitimate means

Rebellion - Replace the goals and means with their own

17
Q

How did Cohen explain crime?

A

He said that in Wc boys lacked the values to achieve which cause them status frustration

led them to forming a delinquent subculture which inevitably caused them to commit crime

18
Q

What did Cloward and Ohlin say about crime?

A

They said that the wc delinquents seek to gain status through illegitimate career paths

19
Q

What are the 3 types of delinquent subcultures that Cloward and Ohlin identified?

A

Criminal - provide ‘apprenticeships’ for utilitarian crime, exist in areas with stable criminal cultures, with hierarchies of professional criminals

Conflict - exists in high population turnover areas e.g gangs

Retreatist - formed of people who fail in both legitimate AND illegitimate means and may turn to illegal drug use
