Universalistic standards and status
A status prepared from school ready for the wider society.
Durkheim: Specialist skills
School teaches specialist skills to play a part in the social division of labour.
Durkheim: Social solidarity
Bringing society together with shared values and understanding.
Parsons: “Bridge form”
Education acts like a bridge, from the family to society
Parsons: Secondary Socialisation
Education transmits norms and values of society.
Parsons: Meritocracy
Success is rewarded not given
Success if based on ability and effort with a “fair playing field”
Stratification
- Links to the idea of
‘Meritocracy’ - If you do well, you’ll get a good job- e.g., completing homework, revising, being the “ideal pupil”
- If you do badly, you’ll get a poor job- e.g., being disruptive, not completing homework etc.
