FUNCTIONAL TESTING Flashcards
1
Q
Why do functional testing
A
- To determine risk of re-injury
- To isolate deficits in muscle performance (strength, power, endurance)
- To detect and correct compensatory movement patterns
- To give athlete psychological reassurance for RTP
- To determine presence of pain
- To identify limb asymmetries
- To establish baseline for subsequent rehab and testing
- To determine if bracing of taping should be considered
2
Q
When should you do functional testing
A
- as part of pre-season screening
- Throughout rehab process
- Near end of rehab to ensure readiness to RTP
3
Q
What is qualitative functional testing looking at
A
How do they look/perform during functional tasks
4
Q
What is a good quantitative test for ACL
A
Single leg hop for distance
5
Q
What are 9 factors to consider during functional testing
A
- Stage of healing
- ROM
- Strength/endurance/power
- Neuromuscular control/proprioception
- Cardiorespiratory fitness
- Functional testing results during rehab
- Prophylactic taping/bracing/padding
- responsibility of the athlete
- Psychological factors
6
Q
What are the criteria for return to training or competition
A
- Complete resolution of acute signs and symptoms
- Full AROM and PROM of joints involved in the activity
- adequate muscular strength (>90%), power, and endurance
- Correct movement mechanics
- Adequate level of cardiorespiratory fitness
- Has successfully performed a series of progressive functionals tests
- Psychologically ready
7
Q
When considering RTP, clinicians must consider:
A
- History of the injury
- Physical examination finding and functional testing
- Type of injury
- Rehab
- Type of activity
- Psychological state
- Competitive level
- Ability to protect the area
8
Q
What is a good framework to use for RTP
A
StAART framework
9
Q
What are the 6 functional testing concepts
A
- Mechanical loading - light to heavy
- movement velocity - Slow to fast
- Movement direction - linear to rotational, direction changes
- Test environment - Closed/controlled to open/uncontrolled
- Correct movement patterns throughout
- Sport specific: movement pattern, loading, energy systems, etc.
