functional recovery after trauma Flashcards
1
Q
what is much of the recovery after trauma due to ?
A
- due to anatomical compensation brought about by intensive rehabilitation
- as the brain compensates for any loss function
2
Q
what is meant by neural reorganisation ?
A
- the brains ability to be taught to learn how to use the working facilities to compensate for the ones that are lost
3
Q
Danelli et all method blurt

Q
AO3 for danelli et al and functional recovery
A
- recovery is possible following trauma as there is evidence to show that rehab programes work successfully
- in some cases, there is no cases of functioning prior to trauma so it is difficult to know the extent to which the brain has recovered to pre-trauma levels
- the ability of the brain to recover varies according to the extent of the damage and the individual
- generalisations are difficult to make
5
Q
factors affecting recovery of the brain after trauma (4)
A
- perserverance
- physical exhaustion
- age
- gender
6
Q
perserverance
A
- sometimes function may be lost but that may be because the individual affected may not b trying and takes that view that is unrecoverable
7
Q
physical exhaustion
A
- when function is recovered it is important to remember that often the function is used with considerable effort and although a person can do a task, they are often fatigued by the effort
8
Q
age
A
there is a deterioration of the brain in old which affects the speed of recovery
9
Q
gender
A
- research suggests women recover better from brain injury as their function is not as lateralised ( concentrated in 1 hemisphere )
- but research is mixed and so clear overall conclusions cannot be made
