endocrine system Flashcards
1
Q
what does the endocrine system consist of and what is its function ?
A
- it is a network of glands throughout the body
- the endocrine system manufactures and secretes chemical messengers called hormones and uses blood vessels to deliver hormones to their target sites
2
Q
what do the endocrine and nervous system work together to do ?
A
- to regulate physiological processes in the body
3
Q
name the glands and organs involved in the endocrine system
A
- pituitary gland
- thyroid gland
- parathyroid gland
- pancreas
- adrenal gland
- ovaries
- testes
4
Q
what is the function of the pituitary gland ?
A
- known as the master gland
- stimulates other glands to release hormones and regulates many of the bodies functions
- controlled by the hypothalamus
5
Q
what does the anterior pituitary gland release ?
A
- it stimulates adrenal gland to produce cortisol
6
Q
what does the posterior pituitary gland produce ?
A
- it produces FSH and LH that control reproductive functioning, oxytocin rate in the mother and infant bonding
7
Q
what is the ovaries function ?
A
- part of the female reproductive organs
- responsible for the production of eggs and the release of progesterone and oestrogen
8
Q
what is progesterone important for in a woman ?
A
- it is important for the post-ovulation phase
9
Q
what is the function of the testes in males ?
A
- male reproductive glands
- causes the development of the male characteristics such as growth of facial hair
- testosterone also plays a role in sex drive and promotes muscle growth
10
Q
what is the function of the adrenal glands ?
A
- located on top of the kidneys
- regulates the flight or fight response
- adrenal cortex releases cortisol
11
Q
what does cortisol cause ?
A
- regulates cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory functions
- production is increased in response to stress
12
Q
what does the adrenal cortex also produce other than cortisol ?
and what does it do ?
A
- aldesterone
- maintains blood volume and blood pressure
13
Q
what does the adrenal medulla release ?
A
- adrenaline
- noradrenaline
