functional information flow Flashcards
what is Somatic information?
Somatic is the stuff we are aware of, have control
over
what is autonomic information?
Autonomic is the stuff we are not aware of, and have no control over
what are the two different types of somatic information?
► Voluntary muscle control
- SOMATIC EFFERENT (motor)
► Sensory information we are aware of
- SOMATIC AFFERENT (sensory)
what are the two different types of autonomic information?
► Involuntary muscle control
- AUTONOMIC EFFERENT (motor)
► Sensory information that we don’t know about
- AUTONOMIC AFFERENT (sensory)
what is voluntary muscle control?
somatic efferent (motor)
what is involuntary muscle control?
autonomic efferent (motor)
what is sensory information we are aware of?
SOMATIC AFFERENT (sensory)
what is sensory information we are not aware of?
autonomic afferent (sensory)
what is the purpose of somatic efferent division/
to get our bodies moving - control the contraction of the skeletal muscle
how many neurons in somatic efferent division?
two neurons between the brain and the effector
what are the two neurons in somatic efferent division?
- upper motor neuron
- lower motor neuron
how do the two somatic efferent divisions connect?
Upper motor neuron makes a synapse into the lower motor neuron
where is the upper motor neuron’s cell body?
in the brain
where is the upper motor neuron’s axon?
spinal cord
where is the lower motor neuron’s cell body?
spinal cord
where is the lower motor neuron’s axon?
spinal nerve
what are effectors?
things the nerves go to and
control = skeletal muscle
what happens to the axon in the somatic efferent division?
it is myelinated in both the motor neurons
where is the upper motor neuron?
entirely in the central nervous system
where is the lower motor neuron?
half in the central nervous system (cell body - spinal cord) and the other half the axon is in the peripheral nervous system (the axon in the spinal nerves)
how many synapses are in the somatic efferent?
two - one between the upper to the lower and another between the lower and the effector (skeleton muscle)
what is the neurochemical released in both synapses?
acetylcholine (Ach)
what are the two divisions of autonomic efferent?
sympathetic and parasympathetic
what are the effectors of autonomic efferent?
- smooth muscle
- cardiac muscle
- glands
- adipose fat tissue
how many neurons are between the brain and the effector?
3
where is the first neuron of the autonomic efferent?
- cell body is in the brain
- axon is in the brain or spinal cord (CNS)
where is the second neuron of the autonomic efferent?
- cell body in the brain or spinal cord (CNS)
- axon in PNS
where is the third neuron of the autonomic efferent?
- cell body in the PNS
- axon in PNS
what is a ganglion?
collection cell bodies in the peripheral nervous system
