Functional areas of the Cerebral Cortex Flashcards
Primary motor cortex
This gyrus immediately in front of the central sulcus is literally “hardwired” to the muscles of the body. Stimulation of specific locations on this gyrus will cause specific muscles to contract.
Motot association area
The area plans movement and ensures muscle contractions are coordinated and smooth.
Prefrontal cortex
This area is responsible for the “executive functions” of the brain. This includes making decisions, determining beliefs, executing judgment, and many other traits that create a person’s character and personality.
Broca’s area
This area is only located on the left hemisphere next to the region for higher mental function and motor movement. It is for speaking and writing language.
Primary auditory cortex
This area receives direct impulses from the ear.
Auditory association area
This area interprets sound impulses and gives them meaning.
Primary somatosensory cortex
This gyrus immediately behind the central sulcus is also literally “hardwired” to the touch receptors of the body (soma).
