Function of the CVS Flashcards
1
Q
Functions of the CVS
A
- transports O2/CO2 + nutrients, metabolites and hormeones
- Thermoregulation
Flexible
-vessels can redirect/store blood
2
Q
Which organs receieve the least blood supply during excercise?
A
- gut and kidneys receive a smaller proportion of CO during excercise
- this occurs through vasoconstriction ( sympathetic activity)
3
Q
State the properties of muscular arteries and give an example
A
-
-wide lumen, non-elastic wall
4
Q
State the properties of arterioles
A
- AKA resistance vessels
- narrow lumen ( small radius), high resistance and thick contractile wall
- controls resistance , hence BF + allows regional redirection of blood
5
Q
State the properties of capillaries
A
- AKA exchange vessels
- narrow lumen, thin wall ( BIG SA-VOL ratio)
6
Q
State properties of veins and venules
A
- wide lumen, distensible wall, storage of blood due to large lumen
- low resistance , allows fractional distribution of blood between veins
