Function Kidneys Flashcards
What does the renal artery do
Carries blood from the heart to the kidneys to be filtered
What does the renal vein do
Returns clean blood to the heart from the kidney
What does the ureter do
Tube that Connects kidneys to bladder, transports filtrate/urine from kidney to bladder
What does the bladder do
Holds filtrate/urine from the kidneys
What does the urethra do
Tube thy legs urine leave your bladder/body. Or tube that allows urine to pass outside the body
What does the glomerulus do
The glomerulus is a tightly packed ball of capillaries that filter your blood. As blood flows into each nephrons, it enters a cloister of tiny blood vessels (glomerulus). This ensures that essential, plasma proteins are retained in blood and filtrate is passed on as urine.
What does the bowman’s capsule do
The bowman’s capsule participates in the filtration of blood from the glomerular capillaries
What does the proximal convoluted tubule do
The PCT is responsible for the absorption and secretion of various solutes (sodium) and water.
What does the distal convoluted tubule do
Receives urine from the glomerulus and is responsible for the regulation of potassium, sodium, calcium and PH
What does the loop of henle do
Reabsorb water and sodium chloride from the filtrate
What is ultrafiltration
Filtration at a molecular level through High pressure
What is urea?
Urea is a waste product. It develops when your body breaks down the protein in the food you consume. It forms in the liver and travels through your blood to your kidneys which then filters out of your blood. It leaves your body through urine.
Why get rid of urea?
Because if too much urea builds up it can be toxic. Can break down cells
