FUNCHEM 25 - Alkenes Flashcards
What are the different types of Alkenes?
2 double bonds –> diene
3 double bonds –> triene
4 or more –> polyene
What types of reactions can alkenes undergo?
Addition and elimination reactions.
Define Electrophilic Addition Reaction.
An Electrophilic Addition Reaction is a reaction in which the rate determining step involves the addition of an electrophile, which is an electron seeking species.
What is a carbocation?
A carboncation is highly reactive, contains a positive carbon atom, and is trigonal planar. Carbocations in order of stability from most to least:
- Tertiary (C+ is attached to three other carbons)
- Secondary (C+ is attached to two other carbons)
- Primary (C+ is attached to one other carbon)
What is Markovnikov’s Rule
In the case of the addition of a halide to an unsymmetrical alkene, the hydrogen is added to the carbon with more hydrogens, to form a more stable carbocation in the intermediate step.
