Q

Define Electrophilic Addition Reaction.

A

An Electrophilic Addition Reaction is a reaction in which the rate determining step involves the addition of an electrophile, which is an electron seeking species.

Q

What is a carbocation?

A

A carboncation is highly reactive, contains a positive carbon atom, and is trigonal planar. Carbocations in order of stability from most to least:

  1. Tertiary (C+ is attached to three other carbons)
  2. Secondary (C+ is attached to two other carbons)
  3. Primary (C+ is attached to one other carbon)

Q

What is Markovnikov’s Rule

A

In the case of the addition of a halide to an unsymmetrical alkene, the hydrogen is added to the carbon with more hydrogens, to form a more stable carbocation in the intermediate step.
