Harold Hadrada and Tostig had arounf 7000 men with them and completely overwhelmed the English troops

Why did Tostig and Hadrada unite in the first place?
Harold’s brother Tostig had been removed from his position as Earl of Northumbria and was in exile. He persuaded Harald Hardrada that he had a legitimate claim to the English throne and that he should come to England and seize the crown from Harold.
May 1066, Tostig raided towns on the south coast, and then sailed up the Humber raiding Lincolnshire. However Edwin and Morcar, Anglo-Saxon earls loyal to Harold Godwinson managed to remove them and Tostig fled to Scotland to wait for Hardrada.

How did the English manage to catch the Viking troops by suprise and win the battle?
They had marched so quickly that that they caught Tostig and Hardrada by surprise at Stamford Bridge -Vikings didn’t even have their armour on!
Fighting was fierce, but Harold Godwinson won the battle killing Hardrada, Tostig and a large number of the Norwegian army.
