Q

How is Crude Oil separated during Fractional Distillation?

A

Crude Oil is a mixture of many different Hydrocarbons, refining separates the crude oil into useful fractions by Fractional Distillation.
Instead of trying to separate each individual type of molecule, we just collect all the molecules that boil at a similar temperature.
Each fraction is a group of compounds with boiling points within the boiling range.

17
Q

How is Coal formed?

A

Trees died and fell into swamps, they then started to rot and form peat. The peat-like rotting vegetation was covered with mud and sand, this sealed it in and put it under pressure. The high pressures and temperatures over millions of years turned the rotting plant material into coal.

18
Q

What happens when you place an Alkane in bromine water?

A

The bromine water will not rapidly decolourise.

19
Q

What is the general formula for an Alkane?

A

C H

n 2n+2

20
Q

Are Alkenes saturated or unsaturated?

A

Unsaturated

21
Q

How is Crude Oil formed?

A

Crude Oil is formed from dead microscopic sea animals which have fell to the ocean bed, over time, layers of mud, sand and silt have formed over them.
High Pressure from the layers along with high temperatures has caused them to form oil.
THIS TAKES MILLIONS OF YEARS!
