Fuels Flashcards
What is a fuel?
Any matter which releases heat energy on combustion.
How many types of fuels are there?
2: Primary and secondary.
What are primary fules?
Fuels that are found in nature.
What are secondary fuels?
Fuels derived from primary fuels.
What are the qualities of a good fuel?
- High caloric density.
- Moderate ignition temperature.
- Low quantity of non-combustible matter.
- Low moisture content.
- Free from harmful gases.
- Moderate velocity of combustion.
- Controllable combustion.
- Affordable.
- Easy to transport.
What are the main elements that take part in the combustion reactions of most fuels?
C, S, O, H.
What are the main non-combustible elements most fuels?
Nitrogen, ash, and CO2.
What are the pre-requisites for complete combustion?
- Intimate mixing of air with combustion matter.
2. Sufficient time allowed for combustion to take place.
What does the caloric value of most fuels depend on?
Their carbon and hydrogen content.
What is gross/high caloric value?
It is the total heat generated when a unit
quantity of fuel is completely burnt, and the products of combustion are
cooled to room temperature.
What is net/lower caloric value?
It is the net heat produced when a unit
quantity of fuel is completely burnt, and the products of combustion are
allowed to escape.
What is the formula for GCV/HCV?
(1/100) ( 8080 C + 34500 ( H - (O/8) ) + 2240 S) kcal/kg
What is the caloric value of carbon?
8080 kcal
What is the caloric value of Hydrogen?
34500 kcal
What is the caloric value of Sulfur?
2240 kcal
