Fuel Utilization - In Lab Questions Flashcards
Oxygen ____ is the lag in oxygen uptake at the beginning of exercise
deficit
What is happening during the oxygen deficit?
aerobic system can’t produce ATP fast enough (oxygen deficit) to keep up with the demand, therefore the anaerobic system is relied upon for immediate ATP production
What two things can cause the oxygen deficit?
- inadequate O2 delivery to the muscle
2. failure of oxidative phosphorylation to increase immediately when exercise begins
What is EPOC?
excess post-exercise oxygen consumption = consumption of higher levels of O2 post-exercise compared to at rest
Causes of EPOC? (6)
- Convert lactate produced –> glucose
- Resynthesize PC in muscles
- Restoration of muscle and blood oxygen
- Some O2 goes to lowering HR and BP
- Elevated body temperature = increased metabolic rate
- Elevated hormones of epinephrine and nor-epinephrine
Why is EPOC greater during high intensity exercise? (4)
- greater heat production and body temperature
- PC is depleted to a greater extent
- higher BLa levels
- higher epi and nor-epi levels
Slow vs Fast EPOC?
you see slow EPOC when O2 is required to convert lactate to glucose (gluconeogenesis) in the liver
Light vs moderate exercise and recovery - %fat and %CHO
Light:
- exercise = 50/50
- recovery = 33% fat and 67% CHO
Moderate:
- exercise = 33% fat, 67% CHO
- recovery = 100% CHO
