Fuel Systems Flashcards
State the four methods of embarking fuel?
We embark fuel when alongside by road bowser, direct jetty, jetty storage tanks and a fuel barge.
What is the flow of fuel from a tanker to the service tank during RAS?
- Fuel will enter the filling trunk.
- Filling trunk when full will weir over the filling manifold.
- We open up the fuel filling valves
- The fuel will then enter the displacement tanks.
- Fuel will pass through the centrifuge.
- Fuel then enters the undisplaced tank.
- Fuel will then enter the service tank.
Why are fuel tanks positioned at the lowest parts of the ship?
For stability and buoyancy to prevent capsize.
Why is the purpose Of the fuel tank filling valves?
Filling valves allow you to direct fuel to the correct tanks and at a common rate so it’s all even.
How does the fuel centrifuge separate the fuel from water?
It will separate water from the fuel this is done by centrifugal force. Fuel/water separation= fuel is less dense so this means the oil would float above the water. Centrifugal force rotates and makes gravity separate the different density of liquids. Undisplaced tanks which is fuel only can be fitted to 95% - service tank holds the fuel water free fuel.
What’s the percentage are the undisplaced tanks filled to?
95%
What is the purpose if the coalescer and what level
The coalaescer is made to remove water droplets, down to 10ppm.
What is the purpose of the fuel pre filters and to what level?
Pre filters are fitted to remove very fine particles it is reduced to 5 microns.
What may the filters be made from
Absorbent filters are made from materials such as paper, cloth, felt and yarn.
How is the ready to use (emergency) tank level maintained?
Via a float operated valve.
What is MBG and where would it be found?
MBG is micro biological growth and this is found in water
State the four fuel tests
Visual test.
water reaction test.
colour test.
diesel fuel filtration test kit.
What hazards are associated with fuel?
Fire and explosion, toxicity, dermatitis, pollution.
