Q

What is used for the cooling systems?

A

Sea water is used to cool engine coolant (fresh water and AL39 mix) via a heat exchanger. Lubricants are cooled in the same way.

Q

Reasons for fresh water circulation system?

A

Machinery is susceptible to salt water corrosion.

Other equipment can be affected by salt water contamination e.g. gas turbine, fuel system and electric motors.

Q

What happens to machines not correctly cooled?

A

Machinery not cooled correctly is more like to cause fires, equipment failure, wiping of bearings or equipment seizing.

Q

What temp will white metal melt at and what’s the term associated.

A

115 degrees, if the temp is exceeded it will “wipe” the bearing.
