Fuel Flashcards
What is FQIS?
Fuel quantity indication system
What is FQPU?
Fuel quantity processing unit
What does VTO stand for?
Volumetric top off
How are the fuel tanks typically arranged?
Left (wing) main tank
Right (wing) main tank
Centre tank
What are trim tanks?
Extra fuel tank that are located in the horizontal stabilisers.
How do the wing ribs affect the fuel tanks?
They separate it into bays and reduce the movement of fuel during manoeuvres.
What are the sump drains used for?
Fuel sampling
Remove water and contaminants from the tanks
Drain the remaining fuel from the tanks
To check for fuel in the surge tanks before entering them
What could happen when taking fuel samples in cold weather?
Water can freeze in the tank and prevent the drain valves from opening or get jammed in the valve during the sampling.
Are the fuel tanks pressurised?
No, they use the vent system to have a similar pressure to that of the outside.
What is a flame arrestor used for?
To keep the flames from the combustion chamber from going into the fuel tank through the vent system
What are the subsystems for the fuel indicating system?
FQIS
Measuring sticks
Temperature sensing
Pressure sensing
