How long should you wait to take fuel samples after the aircraft has moved or fueled? Why?
2 hours to allow contaminants to settle to the bottom so an accurate sample can be taken
What contaminants may be present in fuel?
- Discoloration
- Microbial growth
- Water
- Particulate matter
- Dye
- Emulsions
What procedure should you follow upon finding a fuel sample containing contaminants?
Retain the sample, drain five gallons, take a second sample. If the second sample is bad, retain it, notify maintenance control. If the first sample contains microbiological contaminants or dye then retain the sample and notify maintenance immediately
Who can inspect fuel samples?
An aircrewman designated by the CO, line supervisor, CDI, CDQAR, or QAR
- Is APU/External power required to take fuel samples? Why or why not?
Yes, hydraulic power is required to open the weapons bay
What materials are required to clean a fuel sample kit?
- Alconox
- Lint Frees

How many fuel low point drains are there on the P-8A? How many do we take samples from?
6 low point drains and 2 surge tank drains. Fuel samples are not taken from the 2 surge tank drains
What is the 3% limit during fueling?
It is the air to fuel ratio to allow expansion based on temperature differences
Can you fuel the P-8A on battery power only, if so what are the limitations?
Yes but the plane must be in ground fueling mode within 5 minutes of turning on the system. Only mains 1 and 2 and center can be filled
What is the ratio forward to aft when fueling the P-8A?
1/3 forward 2/3 aft
How do you fuel an AAS configured aircraft?
Fill main 1 and 2 and center to capacity,
How many fuel tanks are there on a P-8A?
10
How many tank groups are there on a P-8A? How are they divided?
6-main 1, main 2, center (3), forward (4,5,6), mid (7,8,9), aft (10)
What must you ensure about the hose before refueling operations can begin?
Make sure the hose is securely connected and it is not under tension
What is the proper psi for refueling?
33-55 psi
Which tanks must be full before filling the forward in aft tanks?
Main 1, main 2, and center
Can you start the APU during refueling operations?
Yes
Can you retry the APU start sequence during refueling operations if the initial startup failed?
No
What is the purpose of the surge tanks?
To collect fuel overflow from main tanks one and two
What happens if the fuel level is too high in the surge tanks?
Fuel will drain out of the vent scoop
How many fuel boost pumps are on the P-8A?
6 AC and 1 DC
Where are the boost pumps located?
There are two for each main tank, two for the center tank, and the DC pump is connected to main one
