The child at birth is completely helpless and cannot survive at all without the help of the family. It is the family which provides care, protection, security, and the child.
Protection and Care
The family provides economically for the family through work, As such, the adults in the home may earn money to provide clothes, food and items needed by the dependents in the home
Economic provision
It is play an important role in a society to understand about norms, discipline, obedience, values, manners morals and ideals of society.
Educational functions:
All the family members offer their prayers together and observe
different religious rites, rituals and practices jointly. All the members believe in a particular religion and observe religious ceremonies at home.
Children learn different religious values from their parents.
Living in a spiritual atmosphere spirituality develops among the children. Family transmits religious beliefs and practices from one generation to another.
Religious functions
It look after the health and vigor of its members. It takes care of the sick old and aged persons of the family. By providing necessary support to its members family takes care of the health of all.
Of course modern family delegates some of its health related functions to hospital.
The child is born today in a hospital or in a clinic and taken care of by nurses.
Health related functions
Families are the means whereby children are supplied with the necessities - food, shelter and clothing.
In the past, children were needed to work on farms and help provide for the family at an early age.
Economic functions
It preserves different cultural traits. Man learns and acquires culture from family and transmits it to succeeding generations. That is why family is considered as centre of culture.
Cultural Functions
It teaches about social customs, mores, traditions, norms, etiquette to the coming generations. Family exercises social control over its members and bring them into conformity with accepted standards.
Senior members of family directly control the behavior of children and thereby they became a good citizen.
Social functions
It is the first institution to develop a child’s character. Parents teach their children values that they learned from ancestors and in the community.
These values are modified to suit the family members’ needs.
Some factors affecting changes are parents’ upbringing, religion, education, social, and economic status.
Family
It is another institution influencing the family. The teachers provide big role in children’s lives. They set lasting examples which may even influence children’s choice of profession.
Good manners learned from school additionally provide solid values foundation.
School
This is an institution that influences Filipino parents and children. Spiritual values which are addressed to the hearts and conscience of a person is powerful and all encompassing.
Church
it starts from childhood where children see the sacrifices of their parents to send them to school and support them in their daily sustenance. Family gathering contribute to this bonding.
