Fryette Mechanics Flashcards
What are the planes of the body?
Coronal - front
Sagittal - side
Transverse - horizontal
Describe axial motion.
Rotational - motion about an axis
Translational - motion along an axis
What is a helical axis?
Axis which is moving about another axis, even while motion is occurring about it.
Describe rotation.
Rotation occurs around a VERTICAL axis, in a TRANSVERSE plane.
Describe sidebending.
Sidebending occurs around an ANTERIOR/POSTERIOR axis, in a CORONAL plane.
Describe sagittal motion.
Sagittal motions occurs around a HORIZONTAL axis, in a SAGITTAL plane.
Define lateral translation.
Movement in a transverse or coronal plane along a transverse axis.
Define vertical translation.
Movement in a sagittal or coronal plane along a vertical axis.
Define anterior-posterior translation.
Movement in a transverse or sagittal plane along an AP axis.
How are sidebending and rotation coupled in neutral range?
In opposite directions.
How is motion controlled in the thoracic and lumbar spines?
Motion pattern of the vertebrae is controlled by the muscles, discs, and ligaments.
How is motion controlled in the cervical spine?
Motion is controlled by the shape of the bone, particularly the articular facets.
Occiput [on C-1] mechanics
Always follows Type I Like mechanics
C1 [on C2] mechanics
Considered to only rotate, all other motions are negligible
C2-C6 mechanics
Always follows Type II Like mechanics
