frustration-aggression hypothesis Flashcards
what causes frustration?
an inability to reach a goal due to barriers
what are the 2 factors affecting the likelihood of aggression following frustration?
-the proximity of the goal
-whether aggression will remove the barrier that is causing frustration
who created the frustration-aggression hypothesis?
Dollard et al 1939
research on the frustration-aggression hypothesis
-Pastore 1952 - aggression is higher if the source is seen as illegitimate eg bus driver not stopping
-Harris 1974 - proximity of goal, people closer to front of a queue were more likely to react aggressively than people at the back
briefly evaluate the frustration-aggression hypothesis
-aggression isn’t always prompted by frustration, and the planned acts of murderers also don’t tend to involve frustration, suggesting other factors are involved
-not everyone that experiences frustration turns to aggression
-much research is based on hypothetical situations as it’s unethical to manipulate someone’s feelings, meaning predictive validity is low
