Fruit Types (4/2) Flashcards
What is a dehiscent fruit?
One that splits open when mature to release seeds
What is an indehiscent fruit?
One that does not split open; seeds remain enclosed within the fruit
What are the indehiscent fleshy fruit types?
Drupe
Pome
Berry
What are the indehiscent dry fruit types?
Achene
Winged achene
Nut
What are the dehiscent dry fruits?
They’re all dry
Capsule
Follicle
Legume
What are the compound fruits?
Aggregate
Multiple
Drupe
What type of fruit is it? What are some of its properties?
Indehiscent one-seeded fleshy fruit with a stony endocarp
Endocarp being the innermost layer of the fruit wall that directly surrounds the seeds. For example, the endocarp is present in drupes like peaches and forms the hard pit/stone that surrounds the seed
Pome
What type of fruit is it? What are some of its properties?
Indehiscent fruit that develops from an inferior ovary where the flesh is from the hypanthium rather than the ovary itself
ex: apples and pears
Berry
What type of fruit is it? What are some of its properties?
Fleshy, indehiscent fruit with one or more seeds that develops from a single ovary and lacks a stony endocarp
ex: tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, grapes, blueberries, eggplants
Achene
What type of fruit is it? What are some of its properties?
Indehiscent, one-seeded, dry fruit
ex: sunflower
Winged achene
What type of fruit is it? What are some of its properties?
An achene (indehiscent) with one or two wings
Nut
What type of fruit is it? What are some of its properties?
Indehiscent, dry fruit with a hard pericarp
Capsule
What type of fruit is it? What are some of its properties?
Dehiscent, dry fruit, generally with many seeds, derived from a compound pistil
Follicule
What type of fruit is it? What are some of its properties?
Dehiscent, dry fruit derived from a simple pistil, dehiscent only along one side
Legume
What type of fruit is it? What are some of its properties?
Dehiscent, dry fruit derived from a simple pistil, dehiscent along two sides
Aggregate
What type of fruit is it? What are some of its properties?
Group of fruits derived from more than one pistil in the same flower
Multiple
What type of fruit is it? What are some of its properties?
Indehiscent group of joined fruits derived from more than one flower
