carotenoids enable the interruption of free radical propagation as a result of lowering oxidative stress so may intervene with the aging process. they have high reactivity to singlet oxygen in the cell membrane so act as a potent antioxidant and lower risk of cancer, macular degeneration, cateracts and heart disease
