Fronts Flashcards

1
Q

What are the following and how are they represented
1-warm fronts
2-cold fronts
3-occluded fronts
4-warm front occlusion(and which side is the warm air)
5-cold front occlusion(which side is the cold air)
6-stationary/quasi front

A

1-warm air sliding gently above colder air, Red
2-cold air digging under warmer air, Blue
3-cold front overtaking a warm front, Violet
4-occluded front where air behind front is warmest
5-occluded front where air behind front is coldest
6-essentially no movement accross frontal zone, Red and Blue

Q

What happens to the following during a cold front:
1-temp, 2-dew point, 3-vis, 4-pressure, 5-wind, 6-cloud

A

1-marked drop and quite sudden, after front passes, Temp remains low but steady
2-marked drop
3-decreases as front approaches, rapidly improves after passage of front
4-falls steadily, after passing remains steady
5-warm front SW starts backing and increases speed prior to arrival, on arrival winds start to veer NW
6-if air unstable, vertically developed clouds form, if stable, stratus will form

Q

What happens to the following during a warm front:
1-temp,2-dew point, 3-vis, 4-pressure, 5-wind, 6-cloud

A

1-steady rise in temp, temporary decrease with precip, after front passes temp remains steady
2-rises and remains steady
3-good before front approaches, after front passes, remains poor to moderate with mist/fog
4-falls steadily, continues to fall after passes until it steadies out
5-weak, blowing from S. As front approaches, winds back SE and strengthen. Veers SW on arrival and is moderate
6-if unstable, vertically developed clouds, if stable, stratus
