Frontal Lobe Flashcards
Overall functions
The frontal lobe is the part of the brain that controls important cognitive skills in humans, such as emotional expression, problem solving, memory, language, judgment, and sexual behaviors. It is, in essence, the “control panel” of our personality and our ability to communicate.
Where is it located
As the name implies, the frontal lobe is located near the front of the head, under the frontal skull bones and near the forehead.
What part of the frontal lobe controls the left side of the body
The right frontal lobe
This can determine how the body is affected by a brain injury.

What region of the frontal lobe is responsible for speech and language production
Broca’s area, a region in the frontal lobe, helps put thoughts into words. Damage to this area can undermine the ability to speak, to understand language, or to produce speech that makes sense.
The frontal lobe houses the?
The frontal lobe houses the primary motor cortex, which helps coordinate voluntary movements, including walking and running.
The frontal lobe helps to
Categorise and classify objects in addition to distinguishing one item from another.

The frontal lobe plays a key role in
Forming long term memories although virtually every brain region plays a role in memory.
What can happen to a person when their frontal lobe is damaged
The main effects are:
Speech problems, changes in personality, poor coordination, difficulties with impulse control, trouble planning or sticking to a schedule.
The frontal lobe is vital for
Understanding and reacting to the feelings of others - i.e empathy
When the frontal lobe cannot properly manage attention
Conditions such as attention deficit disorder (ADHD), may develop.
Mental illnesses the frontal lobe can cause
Hint 6
mania - causes a person to experience unreasonable euphoria, very intense moods, hyperactivity, and delusions.
depression - feelings of severe despondency and dejection.
confabulation - the production or creation of false or erroneous memories without the intent to deceive, sometimes called “honest lying”
perseveration - when someone “gets stuck” on a topic or an idea. You may have heard the term in regard to autism but it can affect others too.
obsessive compulsions - obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disorder in which people have recurring, unwanted thoughts, ideas or sensations (obsessions) that make them feel driven to do something repetitively (compulsions).
schizophrenia - a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. Schizophrenia may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior that impairs daily functioning.
