How does the history of F/V/G differ from the rest of N. Italy?
Wine also dates back 13th and 12th centuries BCE, but thrived during the Dark ages and on through Rennaissance. Mildew and Phylloxera (late 1800’s/early 1900’s) wiped out this region, but recovery began under Fascists in 1931, 30 years before the rest of Italy.
What is the bora and how does it affect vineayrds in F/V/G?
A cold and persistent wind that moves from the Carso (near Trieste in the NE) across the valley and plains.

Red stems, a unique indication of ripeness in the vines of Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso.
What happened to Tokai Friulano in 2007?
In an agreement with Hungary, Italy agreed to remove the termm Tokai from its labels by 2007 vintage, replaced by simply “Friulano”
Describe the Friulano wine
White wine of elegance and delicate, aromas of white fruit, vegetal and herby. Full-bodied, good alc and acidity with minerals and bitter almonds on the finish. Best 2-3+ years after harvest.
Collio is known for fleisch soils. What is it?
Pnonca or Ponka is another name for stratified marl and compacted sandstone. One creates resistence for roots, the other water retention.

Friuli Venezia Giulia
The most important varieties are Friulano, Pinot
Grigio, Sauvignon, and to a lesser extent, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia, Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco.
The wines are proposed both as monovarietal as well as blends of different varieties.
The wines generally show considerable power and structure, aromatic intensity and complexity, as well as good ageing
potential.
What are the red wines of FVG region?
Among the reds Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are the most important yielding cool-climate type reds,
with balanced earthy and vegetal character. However, red wines represent no more than 15% of total production.
