Freud Structural Models of Personality Flashcards
Freud thought humans are driven by two main instincts
- Eros- life instinct powered by libido
- Thanatos- death instinct
Freud’s Structural Model of Personality
- ID
- EGO
- SUPEREGO
ID [placeholder]
.
Unconscious - Origin of personality present at birth
- Satisfaction of instincts
- Source of psychic energy - powered by LIBIDO
Pleasure Principle
- Is the driving force of the id
- Goal is to avoid pain and maximize pleasure; immediate gratification
- no regard for consequences
SUPEREGO
- Suppress ID impulses
- What obeys societal rules
- Moral or idea behaviors; Parents’/society’s norms and standards, rules, regulations and code of conduct
- Grows out of Oedipus complex
- Operates by Morality Principle
- anxiety and guilt by excessively conforming to social norms or perfectionism
Conscience
- Develops through punishment by parents
Ego ideal
- Based on rewards and positive standards; pride and self-respect (e.g., “You’re a good person and you make your family proud of you”)
EGO
Mediator; rational aspect of personality
- Your rationale
Reality Principle: EGO puts constraints on ID;
Maximize- instinctual gratification, while minimizing punishment and guilt – satisfy ID impulses in acceptable ways
According to Freud the mind tries to
- control unacceptable ID impulses
- avoid pain
- maintain harmony
Anxiety experienced by the EGO
- Reality Anxiety
- Moral Anxiety
- Neurotic Anxiety
Reality Anxiety
- fear of tangible dangers
Moral Anxiety
- conflict between ID and superego`
Neurotic Anxiety
- conflict between id and ego
- fear of punishment
Defense Mechanisms
Automatic, unconscious ego strategies for keeping threatening ID impulses from conscious awareness and minimizing anxiety; distort reality
Ex: Repression, Projection, Displacement, Reaction Formation, Sublimation
