What are the stages?
Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latent, Genital
At what age does the oral stage occur?
Birth - 1 year old
At what age does the anal stage occur?
1 year old to 3 years old
At what age does the phallic stage occur?
3 years old to 6 years old
At what age does the latent stage occur?
6 years old to 11 years old
At what age does the genital stage occur?
Adolescence
What should occur in the oral stage?
New ego directs baby’s sucking activities to breast or bottle. If you get stuck in this stage it gets reflected by vaping/nail biting/ smoking
What should occur in the anal stage?
Toddlers and preschoolers enjoy holding and releasing urine and faeces. If you get stuck can either be too closed off/exceptionally tidy (potty train too early) or disorganised/untidy (potty train too late)
What should occur in the phallic stage?
Oedipus complex for boys and Electra complex for girls arise. Children feel sexual desire for other-sex parent. To avoid punishment, they give up this desire and adopt same-sex parent’s characteristics and values. As a result, superego is formed
What should occur in the latent stage?
Sexual instincts die down and superego strengthens as child acquires new social values from adults and same-sex peers

What should occur in the genital stage?
Sexual impulses reappear. Successful development during earlier stages leads to marriage, mature sexuality, and child rearing – reaching adulthood
