what is the conscious?
the small amount of mental activity we know about (e.g. thoughts, perceptions)
what is the preconscious?
things we could be aware of if we wanted or tried (e.g. memories, stored knowledge)
what is the subconscious?
things we are unaware of and cannot become aware of (e.g. instincts, deeply buried memories)
what is neuroses?
mental health problems that an individual is aware of suffering from, for example phobias and depression.
what is psychoses?
mental health problems where individuals are not aware of their problems and do not have insight into the nature of their problems.
who was Anna O?
she suffered from hysteria- exhibit physical symptoms e.g. paralysis, hallucinations etc.
how was Anna O treated?
she was treated by recalling forgotten memories of traumatic events.
what is the id?
It works on the pleasure principle, humans are motivated to satisfy urges and wishes.
Urges and wishes put us in a state of arousal and when they are satisfied arousal is reduced. Therefore according to Freud one of our drives is to reduce arousal
what is the ego?
Works on the reality principle the gratification of the id must be delayed until the situation is appropriate.
Defends conscious mind against unpleasant experiences or forbidden id impulses by using defence mechanisms.
what is the super-ego?
Judges whether actions are right or wrong
Internalized representation of the values and morals of society from our parents
