Central Nervous System Flashcards
what is the role of the spinal cord in the CNS?
responsible for reflex actions such as pulling your hand away from a hot plate. It passes messages to and from the brain, linking it to the peripheral system.
what is the role of the brain in the CNS?
source of our consciousness awareness and where decision- making takes place
what is the corpus callous?
distinguishes our mental functioning from that of other animals.
it is about 3mm thick, and covers the inner parts of the brain
what are subcortical structures involved in?
complex activities like memory, emotion, pleasure and hormone production
what is the function of the striatum?
important role in controlling movements and in motivation
what is the function of the hippocampus (part of limbic system)?
short term memories are passed into long term memories via the hippocampus
what is the function of the ventricles?
produce cerebrospinal fluid to cushion brain and provide nutrients
what is the function of the amygdala (part of the limbic system)?
emotions and aggression; left amygdala may link to a reward system and both positive and negative emotions, whereas the right might be concerned for fear and sadness
what is the function of the hypothalamus (part of the limbic system)?
regulating eating and drinking motivated behaviours
what is the function of the medial temporal lobe?
includes the hippocampus and has a large role in memory
what is the function of the cerebellum?
stores memory
learning of practical skills
what is the function of the corpus callosum?
the bridge between the two hemispheres of the brain and transmits messages between the two halves
what is the function of the limbic system?
concerned with the emotions and memories, includes the hypothalamus, hippocampus and amygdala
what is the function of neurones?
receive and transmit messages in the brain in response to the information received from the rest of the body.
information travels along neurones as electrical signals- nerve impulses.
these signals are passed to the next neurone in the chain at the sites known as synapses.
what are sensory neurones?
carry messages from the sensory receptors (touch and temperature sensitive receptors in skin) along nerves
