Q

What case history was recorded in Freud’s study?

A

Around 3yo Hans became obsessed with his ‘widdler’, playing with it regularly, after being told by his mum that it would be cut off if he continued he developed a castration phobia. Han’s also saw a horse collapse and die in the street.
3.5yo Hans’ sister was born, he was separated from her while she was hospitalised
4yo Hans developed a fear of horses, specifically he though a white gourde would bite him, this was due to their large penises
4yo conflict between Hans and his father began as his father stopped him from getting in bed and cuddling his mother in the mornings, this increased Hans’ phobia of horses until he could no longer leave the house, and suffered attacks from anxiety
5yo Hans’ phobia lessened initially to white houses with black nose bands and eventually vanished, at the end the phobia was marked by two fantasies:
• Hans fantasised that he had several children, when his father asked who the mother was he would reply ‘why mummy, and you’re the granddaddy’
• Hans fantasised that a plumber had come and removed his bottom and penis, replacing them with new larger ones

Hans also told his father he had a dream, one night two giraffes were in his room. One was ‘crumpled’ the other large. Hans took the crumpled one away from the large one, who then cried out. He then sat on the crumpled giraffe

Q

What were the results to Freud’s study?

A
  • houses represented Hans’ father, white bourses with black nosebands were most feared because they resembled the moustached father, also because of their large penises
  • The anxiety Hans felt was really cassation anxiety triggered by his mother threat to cut off his ‘wideler’ and fear of his father caused by banishing him from the parental bed
  • The giraffes in Hans’ dream represented his parents. The large giraffe which Cried out represented his father objecting to Hans. The crumbled giraffe represented his mother, the crumpling representing her genitals, the large neck of the large giraffe is a penis symbol
  • The children fantasy represents Hans replacing his father solving the Oedipus complex, making his father the granddaddy
  • The plumber fantasy represents identification with the father, growing a large penis, like his father
