Freud Flashcards
Freud
Consciouses
The conscious
This is what’s the mind is aware of any 1 point in time mostly the ego
pre-conscious
It consists of material which we are not currently aware of but could potentially be aware of in the future it consists of the ego and the superego
Unconscious
Is consistent material which we can never have a direct access to this contains repressed memories in conscious conflicts Instincts and desires consists of the ego and super ego but mainly the ID
There is no logic in the unconscious therefore opposite feelings such as love and hate can coexist without conflict it makes no distinction between real events and dreams
Fortune conscious mind a constantly trying to find means of expression and influence on us
It expresses itself in slips of the tongue
Freud
defence mechanisms
Repression
this is when we lock away in bad experiences and negative emotions so we forget about it
Regression
reversing back to a childlike State, when you can’t get what you want AKA having a strop
Projection
when an unacceptable thoughts a dealt with by saying they are somebody else’s thoughts
This is so that the ego can deal with the feelings
AK trying to calm yourself down
Sublimination
Process of transforming unwanted impulses and something that’s less harmful aka angrily Hoovering the stairs
Rationalisation
Explaining our action so that makes sense so we don’t feel bad about them
for example saying I didn’t want a biscuit anyway
Displacement
This is what you transfer your feelings onto something with someone else e.g slamming a door when you’re pissed off
Denial
Making yourself believe that something won’t happen when in fact it will
When Padmé thinks anakin wouldn’t kill younglings
despite knowing that he did it before
Freud
ID
This is based on the pleasure principal
It makes decisions based on what we want (self-interest)
A dominant ID will do anything to get what it’s wants including aggression
Freud
Ego
Based on the reality principle
Balances out the ID and the super ego
Responsible for a sense of personal identity
Freud
Superego
Is based on the morality principle it makes decisions based on what’s right for others(kindness)
It reflects social standards learn from the parents and teachers
A weak superego may give up morality and then give in to the ID’S will
Dominant superego is overly moral
it May end up attacking somebody to defend somebody else
A deviant superego means that will follow the example of its parents so if the parent is aggressive then the child will be aggressive
Freud
oral stage
This stage is driven by the ID and if there is two little stimulation in this stage the person will be selfish and caring and untrusting and aggressive
Too much stimulation in this stage means that they will be gullible optimistic and excitable and over-enfusiastic about things
Freud
Anal stage
In this stage is where the ego is developed
If there is conflict in bowl control it may lead to:
Anally returnitative
( to forceful party training )
hate mess
attention to detail
over tidy
punctual
Annually explosive
(not good enough potty training)
Messy
disorganized
and rebellious
Freud
Phallic stage + latency and genital stage
In this stage the superego develops
Children that’s around three years of age have a unconscious sexual feelings about their opposite’s sex parent
oedipus Complex (Boys )
Electra complex (girls )
During this stage children associated into learning what is right and wrong
If these conflicts cannot be resolved in a productive way then Freud says that they will develop a
phallic character which is
self-assured
reckless
and vain
and Proud
and incapable of love
Also issues around in the Superego will have an effect on behaviour
Latency and general stage
This is where odipus complex and electra complex is overcome and libido’s energy is channeled elsewhere as children are going to school which absorbs most of their energies their
Freud
life and death instect
Eros
the life instinct it contains libido the manifests itself as sexuality (sex drive)
Thantos the death Instinct manifests itself in aggression and destructiveness
Freud Belize these natural Instincts or in everybody as soon as they are born and he thinks that people are born with different amounts of these 2 instincts
For example those of high libido may have a more positive outlook in life and somebody with higher levels of Thanatos (destructive energy)
These 2 primitive forces of life and death seek constant expression and satisfification
while at the same time opposing one another in our unconscious
this conflict is the origin of all aggression
Freud
Catharsis
Catharsis is the idea that doing little bits of aggression instead of letting it build up an explode in an aggressive outburst
Freud
Evidence + Feshbach and singer 1971
Feshbach and singer 1971
They found that in a residential school at a lesson the boys were more aggressive if they didn’t watch violent TV programmes compared when they did watch violent tv programs with which they were less aggressive
Watching the violent TV acts as catharsis as it’s a little bit of aggression each time that they watch it
whereas when they didn’t watch the violent TV that aggression built up and therefore they were more violent overall
this supports Freud psychodynamic Theory as it supports catharsis and shows that it works
Freud
bad research
Feshbach and singer 1971
This research has low generalizability due to being androcentric as the entire sample size consisted of Adolescent boys therefore we could not apply the results that was effective at reducing aggression to winning or boys of any other age that wasn’t an adolescent (teenager)
Therefore this is ban research to support freud’s psychodynamic Theory
Freud
comparison to SLT
Compared to Freud’s psychodynamic approach, social learning theory is better due to the idea of imitating aggression being proved three times by bandora in 1961 1963 and 1965
in his famous child imitates model’s aggression towards bobo dolls studys
SLT also has a wider range of aplication as it explains why Watershed is used to stop innapropriate tv from being immitated by children
so that kind of program only starts after 9pm when children are either supervised or in bed
therefore SLT has more evidence supporting it and has a wider feild of appliaction from behaviours to watershed and therefore it is a better explanation of aggression than Freud’s psychodynamic approach
》《》《》》《》《》《《》
Compared to SLT, freud’s psychodynamic theory is less reductionist as it uses aspects of both biology and personality in its explanation of aggression as it shows how childhood development and parts of the subconscious influence aggression
Unlike SLT which only Focuses on the learning aspect
This means that Freud is less reductionist than SLT meaning that it’s less likely that extraneous variables from not considering other factors would effect Freud
Making Freud psychodynamic explanation a better explanation of aggression than SLT
Freud
conclusion and application
In conclusion Freud psychodynamic approach has a very little evidence to support it and has very low validity (it’s unscientific based on very few evidence) mainly due to it being incredibly hard to be falsifyed or objectively proved it to be correct
due to it mainly being based on personality and unconscious Minds and conflict in early development
therfore overall it is a bad Theory at explaining aggression or development of behavior in general
Aplication: one application of freud’s psychodynamic Theory is that catharsis could be prescribed by a therapist to limit aggression and stress for example by doing some violent sports like rugby to do little bits of aggression to stop it from building up and exploding into a violent aggressive rage
Freud
evaluate order
Explain what freud’s theory is its principles (conflict in early stages, id ego superego and catharsis)
Evidence + Feshbach and singer 1971
Bad research ^
compare to SLT (SLT is better and more applicable + more evidence)
conclusion (its bad and unscientific and cant be prooved or falsified due to its nature)
aplication ( prescribed catharsis (rugby))
