Freshers Flu Flashcards
What are the common symptoms of a cold?
Cough (usually mild), sneezing, aches and pains, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat.
What are the common symptoms of the flu?
Fever, fatigue, cough (dry), aches and pains, headaches.
What are the common symptoms of coronavirus?
Fever, cough (dry), loss of sense of taste/smell.
What are causative viruses for a common cold?
Rhinovirus, coronavirus, adenovirus, enterovirus.
What is the causative virus for the flu?
Influenza virus.
What is the causative virus for COVID?
SARS-Cov2
What effect does stress have on the likelihood of catching the common cold?
As stress increases, the risk increases.
What effect does sleep have on the risk of catching the common cold?
As sleep increases, the risk decreases.
What effect does exercise have on the risk of catching the common cold?
It has a U shaped graph. Low exercise has a high risk, then increased exercise decreases the risk, but with much higher intensity the risk increases again.
Which host protein does rhinovirus interact with?
ICAM1
Which host protein does influenza interact with?
Sialic acid
Which host protein does coronavirus interact with?
ACE2
What are the names of the proteins on flu viruses that interact with sialic acid?
Haemagglutin, Neuraminidase, and Matrix-2.
Which influenza is each protein on?
Haemagglutin and Neuraminidase are on influenza A and B, whilst Matrix-2 is only on influenza A.
What does Haemagglutin do?
Acts as the glue, sticks virus to the cell
What does Neuraminidase do?
Acts as the scissors, cleaves bond with sialic acid.
What is antigenic drift?
It happens when viruses accumulate minor antigenic changes/mutations - has epidemic potential.
What is antigenic shift?
Major change in genetic material with pandemic potential. Population do not usually have any immunity to it. Can involve genetic reassortment, adaptation, or a direct jump from/through a different species (swine or avian).
Which influenza can antigenic shift occur in?
Influenza A only.
What are the 5 Zola triggers to seeking medical care?
Interpersonal crisis, interference with social or personal relations, sanctioning (pressure from others), interference with vocation or physical activity, and temporalizing (deadline setting).
What are the 6 questions from the Helman Folk Model?
What has happened?
Why has it happened?
Why to me?
Why now?
What would happen if nothing were done about it?
What should I do about it or whom should I consult further?
