Ancien Regime
“Old Regime”, the political and social system of France from the Late Middle Ages until 1789, when hereditary monarchy and the feudal system of the French nobility were abolished by the Revolution. The creation of intendants (see other deck) did much to undermine local control by regional nobles
Three Estates
First: Clergy of the Catholic Church
Second: Nobility
Third: Bourgeoisie, Sans culottes, and the peasant farmers that had the least amount of power overall
Bread riots
Uprisings caused by the excessive price of bread in France before the Revolution. Over 300 riots occurred in as little as three weeks in 1775 and was a big problem due to the rising population
National Assembly
Created by the Third Estate when they were “kicked out” of the Estates-General. Made up of the Third Estate, they used the American Declaration of Independence as a model for their Declaration on the Rights on Man
Estates General
King Louis XVI called them for the first time since 1614 because France was having financial problems. In this group the Third Estate was the largest but had the least say in decision making
Declaration on the Rights of Man
Explains a list of rights that the National Assembly wanted for France. It became the basis for a nation of free individuals protected equally by law
