1 of the three main causes of the french revolution was French society. French society was broken up into three different estates. French society was an issue because the third estate was the only one paying taxes which they felt was unfair.

2 of the three main causes of the french revolution was the enlightenment. The enlightenment was meant to inform the public with reason rather than tradition. Many enlightenment thinkers shared their views to inform and spread new ideas. These ideas on equality, rights, and the government would cause French people to rethink and challenge the monarchy and current inequality.

3 of the three main causes of the french revolution was the financial issues. Some of the financial issues were the near collapse of the french budget, the King spending money on luxuries, France helping the U.S in the American revolution, and a bad harvest.
Describe the three Estates. In what ways are they unequal?
French society was broken up into three different estates the clergy in the first estate, the Nobility in the second, and the peasants, worker, and Bourgeoisie in the third estate. The first and second estates did not have to pay taxes. While the third estate was the only group paying taxes.
Who was Marie-Antoinette and what was her role in French Society?
Marie-Antoinette was the queen of France and she was married to king Louis. People often blamed her for Frances problems when she had very little to do with any of it.
What was the Estates-General and why was it needed?
The estates general were representatives from each estate. The first and second has 300 each and the third had 600. This was needed so the people had a voice and could vote.
Describe how the Estates-General worked and why it was so unfair.
The Estates General made it so each estate had 1 vote but since the first and second estates did not have to pay taxes when it was brought up in the meetings they could always outvote the third estate. Also, the third estate had 97% of the population while the other two only made up 3% so it was unfair in the way that the much larger group of people had the same voice as only 3%.
What was the Tennis-Court Oath and why was it considered a paper victory?
After the third estate stormed out of the estate general meeting they went to the indoor tennis court and continued with their own meeting creating a new constitution. This was a paper victory for them even though they had taken no action.
What was the Bastille a symbol of? Why was it attacked?
It was a symbol of oppression and it was attacked because they thought they could get weapons.
Who was the National Assembly? How did they react to the Storming of the Bastille?
They were a revolutionary assembly formed by the representatives of the Third Estate of the Estates-General. Their reactions were to adopt the declaration of rights of men and a peasant uprising.
What were the effects of the Declaration of the Rights of Man?
The effects were that women were left out of the document, the new constitution would be drafted, limited monarchy, a legislative Assembly would make the laws, political radicals wanted more reform, and the king was defeated so the new order limited his power.
How was the balance of power shifting between the King and the people during this first phase of the Revolution?
