Deputies of third estate met on a tennis court near usual hall and took an oath not to disperse until they had given France a constitution- they voted to call themselves the National Assembly (becoming more radical)

King refuses to approve Assembly’s decrees..
Summoned loyal Flanders regiment to Versailles. Oct 1- banquet at royal opera house.. Anti rev demonstrations..
This created demands that king be brought back to Paris.. Coinciding with food shortage 6,000 women marched to Versailles after storming Hotel de Ville.. Followed by 20,000 national guard- women invaded the National Assembly.. King provided Paris with grain

A

50,000 flocked to the Champ de Mars- huge field in Paris to sign a REPUBLICAN petition on the ‘altar of the fatherland’. The more moderate commune sent in NG who open fired on the peaceful crowd- 50 killed. Martial law in place for a month, giving the moderates a chance to work out a compromise with the king without facing mob violence.
