There are two designs of coasting mechanisms; what are they?

A

Threaded freewheel: found on older bikes; hub is threaded.

Splined free hubs: uses cassettes/splines to “hold” in place; cassettes use a lock ring to lock it in place.

How do you remove a free hub cassette?

A
  • use the correct lock ring socket
  • wrap chain whip around a large sprocket
  • push down chain whip with left hand and wrench with right hand simultaneously.

A
  • use the correct socket and secure it in a vice - turn rim counter clock wise.
