Booker T. Washington

- believed that racism would end once blacks acquired useful labor skills and provided economic value to society

- opposed Booker T. Washington
- wanted social and political integration and higher education for 10% of AA (“Talented Tenth”)
- founder of the Niagara Movement which led to the creation of the NAACP
American Federation of Labor
- 1886
- founded by Samuel Gompers
- sought better working wages, hours, conditions
- skilled laborer’s arose out of dissatisfaction with the Knights of Labor
- rejected socialist, communist ideas
- non-violent
Homestead Strike
- violent 1894 railway workers’ strike
- began outside of Chicago and spread nationwide
Eugene V. Debs
- leader of the American Railway Union
- voted to aid workers in the Pullman strike
- jailed for 6 months for disobeying a court order after the strike was over
Social Darwinism
application of ideas about evolution and “survival of the fittest” to human societies, particularly as a justification for their imperialist expansion
Spanish-American War
- 1898, a conflict between the US and Spain
- US supported the Cubans’ fight for independence
Philippine War
(1898-1902)
- war in which US used brutal tactics to crush rebellion
- involved executions, concentration camps, destruction, savagery
- Jones Act allowed for independence of this nation when ready, but did not specify a specific date
- eventually, citizens would gain independence in 1946
Anti-Imperialist League
organization formed during the Philippine War to oppose the establishment of US colonies
- opposed US annexation of the Philippines following the Spanish-American War
- saw that the colonies violated the principles of self-governance and democracy that the US stood for
