Free Will Vs Determinist Flashcards
What is free will
The notion that humans can make choices and their behaviour are not determined by biological or external forces
What approach is free will advocated by
Humanistic approach
What is determinism
The view that an individuals behaviour is shaped or controlled by internal or external forces rather than an individuals will to do smth
What are the 2 types of determinism
Hard and soft
What is hard determinism
Referred to as fatalism , human behaviour has a cause, compatible with science as everything we think and do is governed or dictated by internal and external forces
What is soft determinism
There is some room for manoeuvre that people have conscious mental control over the way they behave, we still have rational choices in everyday situations
What approach is soft determinism part of
Cognitive approach
What are the 3 types of determinism (not hard or soft)
Biological, environmental, psychic
What is biological determinism
Emphasises the role of the autonomic nervous system and genes on effects on our behaviour. Many of our psychological and neurological processes aren’t under conscious control and so the biological basis of individuals could be the reason for certain mental disorders
What is environmental determinism
That behaviour is caused by previous experiences, learning through classical and operant conditioning. Choice is actually just reinforcement contingencies that have acted upon us throughout our Ives. Behaviour is shaped by environmental events, socialisation, upbringings ect…
What is psychic determinism
Behaviour is determined and directed by unconscious conflicts that have been repressed from childhood b.
Because it is unconscious people belive that they are free to make any choice and there is a belief that nothing we do is accidental or random, it all has a purpose and are motivated errors that reveals a persona true desire
What are the links with each type of determinism and the approaches
Biological determinism - Biological approach
Environmental determinism - Behaviourist approach
Psychic determinism - Psychodynamic approach
What is the main aspect of science
That there is a cause and effect that can be explained using general laws
How is science in psychology typically shown
Through lab experiments
What is a strength of free will
.practical value
