Free will and determinism Flashcards
Determinism
Behaviour us controlled by external or internal factors acting upon the individual.
Free will
An individual has the power to make choices about their behaviour.
Hard determinism
All behaviour can be predicted and their is no free will, the two are incompatible.
Soft determinism
A version of determinism that allows for some free will.
Biological determinism
Behaviours are determined by our genes
-e.g research on intelligence has shown their is a gene found in people with high intelligence. (hill et al)
Environmental determinism
All behaviour is caused by previous experience through the process of conditioning.
-e,g behaviourist explanation of phobias
Psychic determinism
Adult behaviour is determined by innate drives (e.g lobido) and early experience. (e.g if a child is frustrated or overindulged, the libido remains fixated in that relevant erogenous zone. (internal and external)
Scientific determinism
All events have a cause and effect (IV and DV)
-e.g Harlows attachment study.
Humanistic approach (free will)
Argue self-determinism is crucial to human behaviour.
Without it self actualisation and development will not be achieved. (maslow and rodgers) #look at after revising approaches
Moral responsibility
All humans are accoutable for their own actions, just under a moral responsibility
