Fred Flashcards
“He had so heated himself with rapid walking… his face was all in a glow.”
Fred emits both a physical and metaphorical warmth to those around him
antithesis/foil to Scrooge as he is direct opposite
~ metaphorically stands to represent how people should behave towards each other
“Let him in!”
His unfailing way of accepting flaws and remaining friendly despite the circumstances, arguably makes Fred somewhat unbelievable as a character. He can certainly be seen as a symbol of good; he is used by Dickens as a role model to the reader, showing us how we should behave.
“His eyes sparkled and his breath smoked”
description of Fred – a symbol of Christmas spirit
→ imagery of warmth has symbolism of generosity, compassion & forgiveness as he always makes effort with Scrooge
→ verb “sparkled” has magical + positive connotations, shows he is antithesis of Scrooge = theme of Christmas + generosity/family
‘a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time’
mouthpiece of Dickens’ views:
← full of adjectives - persistence in his positivity regarding Christmas
‘cheerful voice’
adjective cheerful is direct opposite of what we get in Scrooge in stave 1 (‘solitary’)
‘he was all in a glow’ - ‘glow’ physically and metaphorically warm – opposite to cold Scrooge (pathetic fallacy in stave 1) + throughout novella, he is the metaphorical symbol of good
