Frazier CH1 Flashcards
Explain how a pathologic condition affects the homeostasis of the body:
measurable changes in normal structure and function that threaten the internal stability of the body
homeostasis
internal stability of the body
signs of disease
abnormal objective findings
evidence found by physical examination and diagnostic testing
often correlate with symptoms
symptoms of disease
negative characteristics or departures from normal status described subjectively by patients
acute disease
an abrupt onset of more or less severe symptoms that run a brief course, usually less than 6 months, and then resolve, or, in some cases, result in death
chronic disease
develops slowly, is intermittent, lasts longer than 6 months
Identify the predisposing factors to disease:
age
gender
lifestyle
environment
heredity
immunodeficiency
superbugs or super strains in relation to infection
emergence of new, virulent antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria which present a danger even to the young and healthy
How may pathogens cause disease?
they are easily transmitted from person to person and can survive for a long time nearly anywhere in the environment
1 in 100 have the organism without showing signs of infection
benign neoplasms
malignant neoplasms
