low blue light stimulus exaggerated shade avoidance
Franklin 2016 about effect of blue light on shade avoidance
low blue - enhances PIF abundance
reduces HFR1
Franklin 2016 - how do plants distinguish between threat of shade and true shade?
amount of blue light available
less blue = true shade
Goyal et al
blue light mediated phototropism is directly enhanced by R:FR
Hersch et al 2014
identified role of HFR1 as negatice regulator of PIF (in neg feedback loop)
using computational modelling, using mutants pif4pif5, hfr1
In low light, reduced resources so less auxin available. To compensate, sensitivity to auxin is enhanced.
Heddon et al 2003
dwarfing genes in wheat/rice interfere with GA production - Rht genes
Norin10 is high yielding wheat crossbreed, with Norin dwarfing genes which are now resent in 70% commercial wheat cultivars.
Dwarfing alleles are Rht-B1b and Rht-D1b - introduce stop codons in DELLA domain of GA.
Zavala et al 2014
Soybean resistance to stink bugs increases with exposure to solar UV-B.
tested 2 levels of UVB and 4 soybean cultivars
ambient UVB - higher conc of isoflavenoids in pods, and less herbivory.
Attenuated UVB - more damaged seeds and empty pods.
Binary choice test
Brown et al 2005.
UVR8 is in nucleus associated with histones of Hy-5 promoter.
transcript measurements of mutants and WT by RT-PCR to identify genes regulated by UVR8
UVR8-1 needed for UVR8 expression of first molecule in flavenoid biosynthesis pathway - CHS Chalcone synthase.
Screened >50,000 plants and found 4 mutants lacking UVB induction of CHS expression. these were all allelic with UVR8-1.
Janska et al 2010
cold acclimation
tolerance level affected by genetics, plant dev stage, physiological status, min temp experienced, and time of exposure.
adjust metabolism in autumn: increase cryoprotective compounds to maximise cold tolerance, membrand phospholipids stabilised by CORs, dehydrin proteins and heat shock proteins. increase antioxidants, antifreeze activity modulated by CA2+.
cold sensing cytoskeletal microtubules and filaments modulate activity of Ca2+ channels following membrane rigidification.

Detection of neighbours
- reflection of G and FR, signalled by PhyB.
- Reduced PAR signals, detected by cryptochromes, decreased UVB.
- Co-action of light signals, B:G ratio. Less B deactivates cryptochromes so more G relfected.
- Touch - induces leaf hyonasty, also wind prevents elongation.
- ethylene/VOC- inter plant signal. eg barley cultivars planted adjacent enhance aphid resistance and VOC from other cultivars alters allocation of resources from roots to shoots.
