Beginning of 19th century
Only a small number of men could vote (some of them could vote multiple times)
Constituencies varies in size as many had a handful of voters whereas others didnt.
Voting was done publicly this lead to lots of bribery and pressure
From 1832 things started to change…
1832- Great Reform Act
Expanding the vote to many middle class property owning men.
The chartist were a group of men who campaigned for vote to be expanded to all men over the age of 21. Wanted a secret ballot, no property qualification and equal size constituencies and annual parliamentary elections.
1867 Great Reform Act - extended
This extended the vote to workers, removed rotten boroughs and gave MPs to industrial towns and cities that didn’t have MPs before. 700,000 men gained the vote
1872- Secret ballot
1884- Reform Act
1885- Redistribution Act
1872- Voting was done using a secret ballot, placed limits on spending and transporting voters to polling stations 1884- Gave the vote to working class men however the complex voting system prevented many from voting 1885- Constituencies had to be roughly the same size and based off the pursuit of people.
