Frames of reference: Cognitive Disabilities, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Psychodynamic Flashcards
What are the assumptions of Cognitive Disabilities?
Mental illness is caused by an organic brain
- TBI
- Neurotransmitters
- Functional change
- Brain dysfunction
What are the assumptions of Cognitive Behavior Therapy?
All conscious- thought process. Thinking that leads to emotions (beliefs, thinking style).
What are the assumptions of Psychodynamic?
Childhood experiences impact future behavior. What happens in childhood affects you later on in life.
What is assessed w Cognitive Disabilities?
Allen Cognitive level test (ACL-leather test scale #1-6).
measures global cognitive processing capacities, learning potential, and performance abilities. (Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and other cognitive disabilities). Six cognitive levels - profound disability(1) to functional safety (6)
What is assessed w Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
Behavior check list- rated on various behavioral and emotional problems
Beck scale- patient self-report symptom inventories, and the Personality Belief Questionnaire
Anxiety scale -to measure the severity of anxiety symptoms
What is assessed with Psychodynamic?
Dreams
Collages
Play therapy
Unconscious
What interventions are used with Cognitive Disabilities?
increase performance by modifying environment
levels 3-6 of ACL
What interventions are used with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
role playing- scenario’s
journals-logs
finding triggers
thoughts after stress management
What interventions are used with Psychodynamic?
focus on unconscious and past experiences to understand current emotions and behaviors
talk about childhood experiences and relationships with family and significant people
Who would you use Cognitive Disabilities with?
individuals with incapacity to process the information necessary to do ordinary activities safely.
(Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and other cognitive disabilities)
Who would you use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with?
Mental illness - helping a person dispute their irrational thoughts, will empower them to change their behavior.
Who would you use Psychodynamic with?
pediatrics- (sublimation- directing anger to something else-defense mechanism).
What frame of reference is associated with the concept of defense mechanisms, what is a defense mechanism, and what are examples?
Psychodynamic?
- any of a group of mental processes that enables the mind to reach compromise solutions to conflicts that it is unable to resolve. The process is usually unconscious, and the compromise generally involves concealing from oneself internal drives or feelings that threaten to lower self-esteem or provoke anxiety.
-EX: Sublimation- directing anger to something else
projection- blame
repression- no memory/unconscious
humor- deflect anxiety or suffering
