Fractures + Repair Flashcards
open / compound fracture
bone breaks the skin and can be seen
closed / simple fracture
bones is broken but skin is intact
Displaced fracture
Bones are misaligned (usually at ends
Undisplaced fracture
Bone cracks or breaks, but retains its alignment
Explain the Greenstick fracture type
bone bends and cracks
Explain the transverse fracture type
break is horizontal
Explain the oblique fracture type
break is curved or sloped
Explain the comminuted fracture type
bone breaks into several pieces
Define reduction
bone is put into proper alignment
Closed reduction
slowly putting bone back into alignment via cast
Open reduction
surgical repair of bone –> insertion of pins etc
Strain
injury to muscle or tendon
Sprain
injury to joint and ligament
1st vs 2nd vs 3rd degree strain
1 - mildy stretched, some damage to fibres
2 - portion of muscle or tendon is torn and a greater # of fibres are injured
3 - muscle or tendon is completely torn (tendon can be separated from muscle)
Boot vs air cast
