how does bed rest cause contractures
when a muscle is not used, they become weak, staying in bed can make the joints stiff. Overtime muscles become permanently shortened + the joints are permanetly bent

fixed tightening + shortening of muscle

help alleviate complications pts. on bedrest
Bedboard
under mattress to prevent sagging (so spinal cord is aligned)
2 pieces
Foot boards
placed at the foot of mattress & soles of feet are flush against it
Prevents plantar flexion which will lead to permanent footdrop
trochanter
made from bed blankets and under a person’s hip to prevent external rotation
Hip Abduction Wedges
keeps hips abducted (away from midline)
position between client’s legs common after hip replacement (this is our natural alignemnt)
Handrolls / hand grips
prevents contractures of thumb and hand
Bed cradles
keep weight of top linen off their feet
weight of top liners can cause foot drop + pressure ulcer
